Lessons from Oprah

If you have been following me for any length of time, you know I’m a huge Oprah fan. I remember growing up watching her show at 5pm everyday as my mom made dinner and I did my homework. Growing up in Edmonton, Oprah opened me up to so many new ideas including manifestation, spirituality and that it is possible to do anything what you want in life if you get clear on what it is. She also made me realize that my dreams were sacred, and that I needed to take them seriously. Watching The Oprah Show show inspired me to do so many things in life that I probably would have never dared to do if she didn’t teach me to believe so strongly in myself. Like millions of other people, Oprah has been one of my greatest teachers and I’m truly grateful for her inspiring episodes.

When I got an email saying that Oprah was going to be in Seattle for a weekend workshop, I knew without hesitation that I had to go! I saw her in Vancouver a couple years ago, and it was one of the greatest talks I had ever heard. It wasn’t hard to convince a few of my best girlfriends to come along to Seattle too. This was one of the stops for Oprah’s The Life You Want Tour and it included other thought leaders like Elizabeth Gilbert, Rob Bell and Iyanla Vanzant. I was so pumped to soak in all the juicy Oprah wisdom that I could!

On Friday night (post happy hour), my friends and I found our seats in the Key Arena. Everyone had been given a bracelet which we just assumed would allow us to get in and out of the stadium all weekend. But as the lights dimmed, all 15,000 bracelets glowed and changed colors to the beat of the music as Oprah glided on stage in all her magnificent glory. It was one of those transcendent moments when you realize you are part of something really damn cool. We were in the nosebleeds, but there is a presence about Oprah that is so magnetic that you can feel her energy depite not being able to make out any facial features. Whenever I hear her voice, it’s like she is speaking only to me, and I know everyone else who adores her feels the same way.

There were countless moments, ideas and thoughts that woke me up and inspired me to look at my life differently. The weekend was made up of talks, workshops and many dance breaks! My wish is to hold onto this post Oprah glow as long as possible, but while everything is fresh and crisp in my mind, I wanted to share with you some of my biggest ‘ah-ha’ moments. These came from all of the speakers, or Trail Blazers as they were called, and of coarse Oprah herself.

  • Life speaks to you all the time and it’s your job to listen. If you don’t, things will happen so that you do pay attention and it’s usually not pretty.
  • The Universe wants you to win, and will co create with you so that you do, but again you must listen to the whispers.
  • Do everything passionately and you will attract more passion.
  • Failure will teach you so much more than victory.
  • Everything you do has an equal and opposite reaction and where your life is at this very moment is made up of a combination of your actions and thoughts.
  • The Universe can dream a way bigger dream than you can, so you must put trust in the journey.
  • Words have so much power so choose them carefully. This is especially true when you speak to yourself.
  • Every single person on the planet (even Beyonce!) is primarily concerned about being liked and that they matter. Acknowledgement goes a long way.
  • Keep on choosing love over fear and everything will work out.
  • What you focus on grows no matter what, so you should focus on what you do want instead of what you don’t.
  • Even Oprah feels unsuccessful sometimes!
  • Get super clear on what you want and then let go of the outcome because what you attract is what’s best for you at that time.
  • Your only job is to serve the world with what comes most naturally and easy to you.

The whole weekend was magical in many ways, and I was so grateful to be able to share it with my lady friends because I know we will all help to keep each other accountable. A big part of the message that Oprah was sharing is to visualize and work everyday towards the life you want to live. I know for myself I can get so busy that my whole missions for a day is to just get through it alive! But I know that in order to live the big, bold beautiful like that I desire, I have to get better at taking care of myself and also work each day to serve others.

Speaking of serving, my web series, #MakeItTV is in the running for get a grant from Telus so I can make more episodes! This means I will be able to interview even more awesome artists and spread the message that it is possible to do what you love and earn a living. Please take 2 seconds to vote for #MakeItTV. You can vote up to 7 times and please remember to also share it on social media. I really can’t thank you enough for your support! This is something that is so close to my heart and only possible because of my incredible community.

I’m also giving a free workshop at the fabulous Hootsuite office in Vancouver on Wednesday, November 13 from 6-8pm.
